Cycling on Schiermonnikoog

The cycling island

Schiermonnikoog is car-free for visitors. The bike is therefore the way to get around: you cycle from the village to the beach, through the woods, along the salt marsh and over the Wadden dyke. Distances are short, but expect wind: on Schier it decides how hard a ride is.

Renting a bike

You can rent a bike right at the boat or in the village:

Cycle route from the Badweg

A loop of about 2 hours past the bunker museum, the Kobbeduinen, the duck decoy, Vredenhof, the Wasserman and the Berkenplas.

Where you cannot cycle

Kobbeduin is the easternmost point you can reach by bike. After that a bird area begins, which is closed during the breeding season (15 April – 15 July). Outside the breeding season you can continue on foot towards the eastern tip. If you want to reach the Balg without the long walk, take the Balg Expres.

Bikes at the apartment

At Hazelaar apartment bikes are parked outside the door; there is no storage room.

Tips

• Keep the wind direction in mind: cycle out against the wind, then you have it behind you on the way back.
• You can recognise beach access points by a brown post with a red top.
• Bring water and a windproof jacket.
