The Balg is the easternmost part of Schiermonnikoog: a vast area of sand, salt marsh and mudflats that is hard to reach on foot or by bike. With the Balg Expres, a bus carriage pulled across the beach by a tractor, you can get there. Bring binoculars: with a bit of luck you will see seals on the way. By horse and wagon you explore the island at a relaxed pace. The ride leaves from the village and follows the Badweg to the beach, across the Westerstrand towards the tip of the Rif. It then passes through a stretch of salt marsh to the old ferry jetty and returns to the village along the Wadden dike. On the way the guide tells you about everything you see. Boat trips leave from Schiermonnikoog across the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, including to places where many seals rest. Which trips are available varies by season and depends on the tide. Information and bookings via the VVV.
At Boerderij Florida on the Reddingsweg everything revolves around horses. With some riding experience you can join a beach or forest ride. Is your child too young or inexperienced for a ride outside? Then choose a walking pony: you walk a route through the forest together while your child sits on the pony. If you bring your own horse to the island, Florida also offers stabling.

At the end of the Badweg, on the activity beach, you will find Reactief Buitensport. You can go there for kites, a ride in a sand yacht and other outdoor activities. The wide beach and the often strong wind make Schiermonnikoog ideal for this. Some activities have fixed zones on the beach; ask locally where you can go.

In the middle of the dunes lies tennis park De Hinneleup, with a cosy clubhouse and three Kushion Court courts. These courts have a top layer of millions of small rubber cushions. This makes them kinder to your joints and playable in almost any weather. The game is a little slower, which makes tennis accessible for young and old. You can also join an islanders' tennis toss.
