Why Schiermonnikoog is so good with kids

There's hardly any car traffic on Schiermonnikoog. Children can cycle and explore safely, while you get to relax. Distances are short, the nature is stunning, and there's always something to do: hunting for shells, building dens in the dunes, spotting seals, or flying a kite on the wide beach.

For kids, the ferry crossing from Lauwersoog is already the start of the adventure.

An apartment that works for families

The Hazelaar sleeps up to 5 people across two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Parents and children each get their own space, so there's no morning queue for the bathroom. The separate toilet is an extra convenience.

Bedroom 1 has a double box-spring bed and its own bathroom. Bedroom 2 is a three-person room, with one bed on a raised level, also with its own bathroom. Together that makes 5 sleeping places, so the Hazelaar suits a family with three children or two couples plus a fifth guest.

The open kitchen connects to the dining area and living room, so you can cook while keeping an eye on the kids. The kitchen is fully equipped, including a dishwasher, and there's wifi for a film night on a rainy day.

Things to do close to the apartment

The beach is a 450-metre walk away: ideal with young children and lots of beach gear. On the other side, the forest begins, where the Berkenplas with its playground and pavilion is a family favourite. In the village, 1.3 km away, you'll find the shell museum and the National Park visitor centre.

Older children love the bunker museum and climbing the lighthouse. A guided mudflat walk (wadlopen) with the whole family is a true island experience.

Practical tips

Hire bikes, child seats or a bike trailer in the village. Have your luggage transported from the ferry straight to the apartment, so you can cycle there worry-free. Please note: pets aren't allowed at the Hazelaar and smoking isn't permitted.
