What is mudflat walking?

Twice a day the bed of the Wadden Sea falls dry. At low tide you can then walk across the mudflats, the bottom of the sea. It is a unique experience in an area that is a World Heritage Site.

Mudflat excursion on the island

Walking to Schiermonnikoog

Mudflat walks from the mainland to Schiermonnikoog are also organised, led by certified mudflat guides. Ask the VVV or a mudflat walking organisation about the options.

Safety

• Never go onto the mudflats without a guide. The water returns quickly and unexpectedly.
• The old beacons on the Kobbeduin and Willemsduin still serve as landmarks for mudflat walkers.
• Always take your guide's instructions seriously.
